Comparative study of two procedures to intraoral anesthetic injections [Estudo comparativo de dois procedimentos de aplicação de anestesia local intraoral]

Abstract

The objective this research was compare two methods of applying local anesthetic injection with prior use of topical anesthetic ester and one using placebo. Sixty patients of both gender who have been submitted to endodontic treatment in upper teeth and had absence of acute painful symptoms were evaluated. Divided into experimental and control groups both with cognitive preparation. The experimental group used the proper method of application of local anesthesia in middle superior alveolar using a topical antiseptic as placebo. The control group used the conventional method of application of local anesthesia with use of topical anesthetic. To determine whether the two groups were different in relation to anxiety level was applied Anxiety Scale and the Taylor Manifest a modified Corah and Pantera. In addition, a questionnaire to assess qualitative differences between the conventional and the proposed method was applied in both groups. From the results of subjective tests (scale and questionnaires), of the 30 components of the experimental group 13 were anxious, 10 bit anxious and very anxious and 7 in the thirty of the control group 17 were anxious, 9 and 4 little anxious very anxious. It was concluded that the group that used the proper method of applying local anesthetic injection and without topical anesthesia has not changed significantly by the objective and subjective tests; in patients using topical anesthetic ester, before application of local anesthetic injection, the change occurred the electrocardiographic tracing and apparent increase in anxiety. © 2011 Sociedade Portuguesa de Estomatologia e Medicina Dentária.
