This work has as its objectives to know which social competencies are considered important to the exercise of leadership and which type of predominant culture in the company. The survey of descriptive type used qualitative and quantitative treatments. The sample was composed of directors, managers superintendents and supervisors of an automaker located in the Paraiba Valley region in the state of São Paulo. For collecting data, two instruments were used: A guide of semi-structured interview and an identification scale of the organizational culture (IBACO). The data collected during the interviews were categorized by content analysis and the questionnaires results were submitted to the criteria established by the instrument. It was noticed with the analyzed categories that the behaviors of the leaders, expected by the correspondents, are more similar to the leaders' behavior than the managers'. It is expected that the leaders are able to provoke and implement changes with technical knowledge without underestimating the importance of the communication competencies, interpersonal relationships, political skills among others. The result of the organizational culture questionnaire showed that the predominant values are the cooperative professionalism, values associated with the employees' well-being and integrative practices.
