Os santeiros de barro cozido do Vale do Paraíba Paulista : práticas artesanais e identidades sociais

Abstract

Resumo: O Vale do Paraíba paulista insere-se em um contexto histórico que apresenta a religiosidade cristã como um elemento preponderante na sua formação social. Esta pesquisa refere-se a santeiros que se utilizam do barro cozido como base de suas produções artísticas. Busca-se relacionar as práticas e o saber-fazer desses atores, bem como os santos que produzem com a memória coletiva e a identidade social, que promove e mobiliza a cultura local. Na contemporaneidade, as produções de santos de barro têm se modificado, devido às diferentes motivações e às novas configurações religiosas. Analisa-se as práticas atuais dos santeiros de barro cozido no Vale do Paraíba paulista, sua existência e as relações entre as religiosidades, práticas artesanais e identidades sociais, com vistas a discutir a formação da identidade individual e coletiva no contexto dos aspectos simbólicos do desenvolvimento humano. A fundamentação teórica foi pautada nos preceitos do estudo interdisciplinar abordando conceitos como contextos históricos, cultura, tradição, identidade, memória e práticas sociais. Desta maneira, o presente trabalho procura questionar a relação entre a prática da modelagem do barro, a formação da identidade dos Santeiros do Vale do Paraíba paulista e as transformações que suas práticas vêm sofrendo devido às condições de existência do estilo de vida moderno. Na metodologia da pesquisa utiliza-se a abordagem qualitativa, de natureza exploratória e analítica, tendo o método biográfico como referência para a coleta de dados. A análise dos dados conta, ainda, com a inspiração da sociologia weberiana. Como resultado percebemos que mesmo com as transformações da modernidade, os santeiros de barro estudados buscam na tradição religiosa uma forma de orientar suas práticas artísticas, assim como estabelecem uma abertura para as dinâmicas culturais do presente, ainda que suas motivações para a confecção de imagens sacras sejam divergentes.

Abstract: The Paraíba Valley of São Paulo is inserted in a historical context that presents Christian religiosity as a preponderant element in its social formation. This research refers to santeiros who use the clay as the basis of their artistic productions. It seeks to relate the practices and know-how of these actors, as well as the saints they produce with the collective memory and social identity that promotes and mobilizes the local culture. In contemporary times, the productions of clay saints have been modified, due to the different motivations and the new religious configurations. The present practices of the baked clay potters in the Paraíba Valley of São Paulo are analyzed, their existence and the relationships between religiosities, artisanal practices and social identities, with a view to discussing the formation of individual and collective identity in the context of the symbolic aspects of development human. The theoretical basis was based on the precepts of the interdisciplinary study addressing concepts such as historical contexts, culture, tradition, identity, memory and social practices. In this way, the present work seeks to question the relationship between the clay modeling practice, the formation of the Santeiros' identity in the Paraíba Valley of São Paulo and the transformations that their practices have suffered due to the existence conditions of the modern lifestyle. In the methodology of the research the qualitative approach is used, of exploratory and analytical nature, having the biographical method as reference for the data collection. The analysis of the data also counts on the inspiration of Weberian sociology. As a result we realize that even with the transformations of modernity, the clay masters studied seek in the religious tradition a way of orienting their artistic practices, as well as establishing an openness to the cultural dynamics of the present, although their motivations for the making of sacred images are divergent.
