Minimum wage and food safety in taubaté-SP [Salário mínimo e segurança alimentar em Taubaté-SP]

Abstract

Two conditions must be fulfilled to exist food safety: food offer and access to it. The national minimum wage should guarantee for the worker and his family the basic needs. This paper aims to evaluate the capacity of families with income below two minimum wages to acquire a minimum essential ration to feed this family each member monthly. Assuming as a reference May 2005 and the city of Taubaté, the paper compares both the families per capita income and the minimum essential ration cost in the city.
