O contraste abolicionista em Vítimas-algozes e Úrsula.

Abstract

Resumo: A escravidão no Brasil durou três séculos e meio, e somente a partir da segunda metade do século XIX as ideias abolicionistas começaram a ganhar força com os intelectuais da época. Considerando que muitos literatos associados a esse movimento utilizavam do espaço na imprensa para difundir o debate sobre o fim da escravidão, é importante traçar uma análise comparativa das ideias expostas na novela "As vítimas-algozes: quadros da escravidão" (1869), de Joaquim Manuel de Macedo, e no romance "Úrsula" (1859), de Maria Firmina dos Reis. As obras em questão apresentam traços distintos ao retratar o negro e a escravidão. A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar trechos das obras, que evidenciem essa distinção, a partir da construção das personagens. Dessa forma, a pesquisa tem caráter qualitativo. Recorreu como fonte de coleta de dados a pesquisa bibliográfica nas obras e nas opções teóricas em que se baseia este trabalho. Para compreender o contexto histórico da obra, utilizou-se o livro de Boris Fausto (2011), que traça de forma concisa a história do Brasil e de Schwarz e Gomes (2018), que busca compreender a escravidão no Brasil e seus significados. Para entender os princípios abolicionistas, baseou-se no texto de Joaquim Nabuco (2000), intelectual que apoiou essas ideias e novamente Schwarz e Gomes (2018). Para a análise feita sobre a construção de personagens nessa pesquisa foi escolhido como auxílio teórico o livro de Antonio Candido e Rosenfeld (1968). Além disso, utilizamos Gayatri Spivak (2010) e suas reflexões sobre a fala do subalternizado no discurso acadêmico ocidental. A partir disso, encontramos elementos contrários de uma obra para outra, em relação às ideias de liberdade difundidas pelos movimentos abolicionistas. Enquanto a novela de Joaquim apresenta o negro como objeto e de forma sombria, o romance de Maria Firmina constrói o negro como sujeito de sua própria história.

Abstract: Slavery in Brazil lasted three and a half centuries, and only from the second half of the nineteenth century abolitionist ideas began to gain strength among the intellectuals of the time. Considering that many writers associated with this movement used space in the press to spread the debate about the end of slavery, it is important to draw a comparative analysis of the ideas set out in Joaquim Manuel Macedo's novella "Vítimas algozes: quadros da escravidão", and in the novel "Úrsula", by Maria Firmina dos Reis. The works in question present different traits when portraying the Negro and the slavery. The present research aims at analyzing sections of the works, which evidence this distinction, mainly in the construction of the characters. This research has a qualitative character. It used bibliographical research as a source of data collection in the works and in the theoretical options that this work is based. To understand the historical context of the work, the book by Boris Fausto (2011) was used, which traces the history of Brazil in a concise way. For the history of slavery in Brazil and its consequences, the work of Schwarz and Gomes (2018) was used. The abolitionist principles used in this work were taken from the text of Joaquim Nabuco (2000), intellectual who supported these ideas. Also, the work of Gayatri Spivak (2010) and her discussions about the voice of the subaltern in the academic speech were used. For the analysis made on the construction of characters in this research the theoretical basis was the book A personagem de ficção, by Antonio Candido and Rosenfeld (1968). From this, we found opposing elements from one work to another, in relation to the ideas of freedom spread by the abolitionist movements. While Joaquim's novel presents the Negro as an object and in a somber way, Maria Firmina's novel builds the black as the subject of her own story.
