Do passado glorioso ao presente abstrato : uma análise histórica e ambiental do rio Paraíba do Sul

Abstract

Resumo: Buscando uma compreensão sobre a relação entre o rio Paraíba do Sul e a sociedade que dele sobrevive, o presente trabalho analisa a dinâmica de interatividade rio-cidade, na perspectiva da História Ambiental e da imprensa periódica, ao longo do século XX. A bacia hidrográfica como escopo é a do rio Paraíba do Sul, contemplando os trechos paulista e fluminense. Em território paulista, definiu-se o município de Taubaté como recorte parcial para abranger a análise, uma vez que ele está localizado na Região Metropolitana do Vale do Paraíba e Litoral Norte (RMVPLN), considerada, pelas mais recentes estatísticas, uma das áreas populacionais mais desenvolvidas e urbanizadas do país. A princípio, a pesquisa aferirá, desde uma perspectiva dialética, a indissociabilidade rio-cidade, que ao mesmo tempo em que cria condições de interdependência entre esses elementos, sobretudo econômica e energética, produz, simultaneamente, forças de afastamento do rio da vida social. Pode significar que, geometricamente, estão próximos, porém distantes socialmente. A metodologia consiste em uma pesquisa bibliográfica e documental. A primeira, a partir de uma revisão de literatura. A segunda, utilizando a Biblioteca Nacional Digital e a Hemeroteca "Antônio Mello Junior", na Divisão de Museus e Arquivo Histórico de Taubaté, investiga precisamente a imprensa periódica paulista e fluminense, datada do século XX. Como categoria de tempo e espaço, utilizou-se a metodologia proposta por Santos (2006). Os fundamentos teóricos do trabalho situam-se em dois eixos principais: a) o rio Paraíba do Sul como categoria de análise e b) a interação rio-cidade no contexto da História Ambiental e da imprensa periódica. Objetiva-se, com o presente trabalho, investigar e refletir sobre o relacionamento histórico e ambiental do Paraíba do Sul com o conjunto dos usos da bacia hidrográfica. Conclui-se que cada período histórico produziu uma interação singular com o rio Paraíba do Sul. A imprensa periódica revelou que ainda que o rio Paraíba do Sul fosse um corpo poluído e distante da população, foi imprescindível para o projeto urbano-industrial em tela na região valeparaibana.

Abstract: Seeking an understanding of the relationship between the Paraíba do Sul River and the society that survives from it, this paper analyzes the dynamics of river-city interactivity, from the perspective of Environmental History and the periodical press, throughout the 20th century. The scope of the hydrographic basin is the Paraíba do Sul river, covering the São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro stretches. In São Paulo, the municipality of Taubaté was defined as a partial cut to cover the analysis, since it is located in the Metropolitan Region of Vale do Paraíba e Litoral Norte (RMVPLN), considered, by the most recent statistics, one of the most populated areas most developed and urbanized in the country. At first, the research will assess, from a dialectical perspective, the indissociability between river and city, which, while creating conditions for interdependence between these elements, especially economic and energy, simultaneously produces forces that distance the river from social life. It may mean that, geometrically, they are close, but socially distant. The methodology consists of a bibliographical and documentary research. The first, based on a literature review. The second, using the National Digital Library and the Hemeroteca "Antônio Mello Junior", in the Division of Museums and Historical Archives of Taubaté, investigates precisely the periodical press from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, dating from the 20th century. As a category of time and space, the methodology proposed by Santos (2006) was used. The theoretical foundations of the work are located in two main axes: a) the Paraíba do Sul river as a category of analysis and b) the river-city interaction in the context of Environmental History and the periodical press. The objective of this work is to investigate and reflect on the historical and environmental relationship of Paraíba do Sul with the set of uses of the hydrographic basin. It is concluded that each historical period produced a unique interaction with the Paraíba do Sul river. The periodical press revealed that even though the Paraíba do Sul river was a polluted body and far from the population, it was essential for the urban-industrial project in question in the Vale Paraíba region.
