Abstract: Hypothesis of the study: In the present study it was hypothesized that experimental composite resins containing alternative photoinitiators presented better mechanical properties compared to the QC system. Objectives: In this study, the influence of different photoinitiator systems on Knoop hardness of top and base surfaces, polymer plastification, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity and depth of cure of experimental composite resins was evaluated. Methods: The experimental composites were made with BisGMA and TEGDMA monomers in the proportions of 50/50% by mass and BaAlSi and SiO2 loading particles corresponding to 65% by mass. The photoinitiators were used in the following proportions: CQ + 0.2% and 0.8% DMAEMA; Phenyl propanolone PPD + 0.2% and 0.8% DMAEMA; MAPO at 0.42%; BAPO 0.50%; CQ + PPD + 0.1% DMAEMA, 0.1% and 0.8% by mass, respectively. The inhibitory agent used was 0.01% by weight BHT. All samples were photoactivated with the Bluephase G2 polywave LED (Ivoclar Vivadent) for 20s. For Knoop hardness, cylindrical samples (n = 10) of 4mm x 2mm were made, after 24h were subjected to the Knoop hardness test on top and base surfaces, then the same samples remained immersed in absolute alcohol for 24h Taken to the microdurometer for a new evaluation of the plastification of the polymer. The flexural strength and modulus of elasticity were evaluated with the mini-flexion test in 7 x 2 x 1mm (n = 10) bar-shaped specimens in a universal test machine. The depth of cure was observed through the hardness profile in semicircular samples with 4mm thickness and 2.5mm radius (n = 10) considering up to 80% of the highest hardness average. The obtained data were statistically evaluated by the analysis of variance "one way" and Tukey test, with significance level of 5%. Results: The experimental resin containing the MAPO photoinitiator presented higher modulus of elasticity, flexural strength, top hardness and lower degradation caused by alcohol compared to CQ. BAPO presented higher modulus of elasticity, top surface hardness and lower alcohol degradation on this surface in relation to CQ. The CQ and PPD presented similar results in practically all variables, except for the depth of cure and hardness of the base. The resin containing CQ presented a greater depth of cure among the resins tested. Conclusions: The MAPO and BAPO would be interesting alternatives to replace the QC as photoinitiating agent, presenting better mechanical properties, but with a lower depth of cure than the QC.
