Abstract: Particle counting is a well-established method for detecting contaminations in industrial oil aiming at extending machinery shelf life. Although being standardized procedures for oil analysis vast, they are also very time-consuming and complex to be performed by most companies. This results in an often used standard-less analysis called photo-comparison. Besides not being standardized, this method does not present the real condition of the oil and is highly subjective. In this paper, we present an approach for semi-automatic classification and counting of particles in industrial oils strictly in accordance with the ISO 4406 standard. The aim is to turn feasible for companies in general, standardized methods for particle counting. The results demonstrate the potential of the tool to quickly and effectively count particles, providing the specialist with relevant information concerning the characteristics of the particles, availing one a more accurate decision making.
